Cost-effective assembly solutions
for aerospace and industrial applications.
Solid and peelable laminated shims, packers, tapers and spacers, provide assembly
solutions in the manufacture of aerostructures and high-precision industrial equipment.

Laminated Peelable Aerospace Shims
Attewell specialises in the manufacture and supply
of laminated shim materials and components for
achieving close tolerance dimensions on complex
aerostructures and engineering assemblies. Using
foil materials from 0.025mm (0.001") to 0.1mm
(0.004") the company has perfected a process of
bonding multiple layers together under heat and
pressure to produce a strong and rigid structure that
functions as a solid but may be reduced to the
precise thickness by peeling off layers.
Conversion Capabilities
Laminated and Solid Packers, Spacers
and Tapers
Attewell produces solid packers and spacers in a
similar way to those manufactured from laminated
stock, using press or machine processes. An infinite
variety of shapes can be produced dedicated to a
specific customer requirement. A full testing and
protective treatment service is offered on all
components, using approved sources.
Tapered packers
Tapered shims are designed to cope with angles and
curves and ensure a close-tolerance assembly
whenever relatively large spaces are encountered
between mating parts.
Shapes
Components are manufactured from customers’
drawings using an extensive range of in-house
machine tools and equipment. The choice of
process will be determined by the nature of the
product and the method that offers the best
economic solution or speed of production.
The company’s CNC Punch pressing facilities
provides a versatile and rapid service.
Precision with integrity…

Photo-Chemical Machining
The combination of modern computer-aided
design and a photo-sensitive mask enables
Attewell to produce highly-accurate and
intricate components used in a very wide range
of systems applications. The technique is
particularly attractive for use in electronics,
filtration, aerospace and defence.
Minute holes and radii, at a pitch that would
make conventional processes uneconomic, can
be produced without inducing burrs or stresses
in the material. In addition, to gain maximum
yield from a standard sheet 450mm x 300mm
(18" x 12") and depending on size, a large
number of components can be produced
simultaneously. The best use of the material
can also be obtained by intelligent ‘nesting’ of
similar parts.
Tooling costs are low, resulting in cost-effective
solutions for prototype development of thin
sheet details. A wide range of metals can be
etched from stainless steel to brass 0.127mm
(0.005") to 1.6mm (0.063") thick.
Forming
Attewell has a range of equipment to carry out
forming of a number of etched products.
Surface treatments
Attewell has partnerships with a number of
treatment houses catering for aerospace or
commercial applications.

Thermal Ceramics aerospace ceramic components

With applications ranging from commercial aviation to state-of-the-art warplanes to space exploration vehicles, aerospace engineers throughout the world rely on Thermal Ceramics aerospace ceramics to provide consistent, outstanding performance. Typical applications include thermal insulation safeguarding the electronics in cockpit and flight data recorders (FDRs), heat shield use in air ducts, auxiliary power units, and thrust reversers. Thermal Ceramics offers products with low thermal conductivity, high maximum temperature use-limit, ease of fabrication, and/or vibration durability as well as fire protection insulation systems that provide either a minimum cold face temperature, or simply structural integrity following the test.
Because thermal conductivity is often the most important material characteristic, our products are grouped into categories as follows:

  • Very High Thermal Efficiency Materials - Min-K Microporous Insulation Systems, which are available as flexible sheets or rigid boards, feature the lowest thermal conductivity of any known material. These products were key components of the Gemini, Apollo, and other space programs due to their low thermal conductivity and ability to survive both high-vibration environments and fire conditions.
  • High Thermal Efficiency - Kaowool paper and K-Shield felt products consisting of high temperature refractory ceramic fibers or Superwool fibers converted to a paper form, offer outstanding handling characteristics, low thermal conductivity, and are well suited to die-cutting applications.
  • Standard Thermal Efficiency - Kaowool blanket and Cerafelt products, the most cost-effective, flexible, high temperature insulation options, find use in many applications where space and weight are less important.
  • Endothermic high thermal efficiency - Materials are found in flight data recorders. In the event of a fire, the time it takes for heat to progress into the interior of an enclosure, such as a flight data recorder, can be delayed using a low thermal conductivity material, coupled with a one-time use endothermic additive.

Molded Min-K Insulation
     Boards and Shapes
