CORROSION REPAIR
AIRCRAFT CORROSION REPAIR … Patch Repair of Corroded Aircraft Skin Areas,
Environmental conditions in Europe are conducive to corrosion attack of aircraft structures. In military aircraft corrosion problems occur especially at countersunk fastener holes. The corrosion is generally removed by grinding. A limited amount of material removal is specified by the aircraft manufacturers, but it is sometimes necessary to exceed these limits. When this happens a repair is necessary to allow continued operation. Key to success is the effectiveness of bonded patch repairs. The patch materials can be aluminum alloy sheet and aramid fibre reinforced composite prepreg. A cold curing acrylic based adhesive is used for bonding. Bonded patches are potentially very good repairs for areas weakened by corrosion and its removal.
