Thermal Ceramics aerospace ceramic components
With applications ranging from commercial aviation to state-of-the-art warplanes to space exploration vehicles, aerospace engineers throughout the world rely on Thermal Ceramics aerospace ceramics to provide consistent, outstanding performance. Typical applications include thermal insulation safeguarding the electronics in cockpit and flight data recorders (FDRs), heat shield use in air ducts, auxiliary power units, and thrust reversers. Thermal Ceramics offers products with low thermal conductivity, high maximum temperature use-limit, ease of fabrication, and/or vibration durability as well as fire protection insulation systems that provide either a minimum cold face temperature, or simply structural integrity following the test.
Because thermal conductivity is often the most important material characteristic, our products are grouped into categories as follows:
- Very High Thermal Efficiency Materials - Min-K Microporous Insulation Systems, which are available as flexible sheets or rigid boards, feature the lowest thermal conductivity of any known material. These products were key components of the Gemini, Apollo, and other space programs due to their low thermal conductivity and ability to survive both high-vibration environments and fire conditions.
- High Thermal Efficiency - Kaowool paper and K-Shield felt products consisting of high temperature refractory ceramic fibers or Superwool fibers converted to a paper form, offer outstanding handling characteristics, low thermal conductivity, and are well suited to die-cutting applications.
- Standard Thermal Efficiency - Kaowool blanket and Cerafelt products, the most cost-effective, flexible, high temperature insulation options, find use in many applications where space and weight are less important.
- Endothermic high thermal efficiency - Materials are found in flight data recorders. In the event of a fire, the time it takes for heat to progress into the interior of an enclosure, such as a flight data recorder, can be delayed using a low thermal conductivity material, coupled with a one-time use endothermic additive.
Molded Min-K Insulation
Boards and Shapes
Low thermal conductivity
Machined to customer specifications
Organic free
Designed for applications where low thermal conductivity plus space and weight savings are a critical consideration. This includes steady-state and transient applications.
Comes in two standard types: Min-K 1302 which is specifically designed to be molded into block and machined to specific customer designs and the Min-K TE Series which was developed specifically to eliminate the conditioning of offgasing for contact with thermoelectric conversion devices.
Min-K Data Recorder
So named because of its application in protecting Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder memory chips
Compression resistant
Lightweight
Organic free
Machined to customer specifications
Comes in two types - Endothermic which contains an endothermic raw material which absorbs a portion of the energy of a fire or sudden heat up and Non-Endothermic which can cycle between high and low temperatures.
Flexible Min-K
Composite system consisting of a microporous core encapsulated between layers of high temperature cloth and quilted in 1" squares
Ideal for high-vibration environments
Provides superior insulation in limited space with minimum weight
Durable
Comes is two core formulations: Mix F150 is used for applications at 1200°F and lower and Mix F182 is utilized for temperatures up to 1832°F and where high vibration environments are seen.
Micro-Foil® and Flexible Min-K Insulating Tapes
Insulating tapes are formulated to provide the dimensional stability and durability essential to applications requiring dependable performance and minimal maintenance. Micro-Foil Insulating Tape is available for temperature use limits of 900°F (Type 475), 1200°F (E-Mat), or 2000°F (Type HT), and can be readily conformed to small parts and tubing. Flexible Min-K Insulating Tape has a core continuous use limit of 1800°F and has a lower thermal conductivity than the molecular conductivity of still air, as well as significantly reduced conductivity at high altitudes.
Easy to use
Flexible
Variety of sizes and thickness
Min-K Moldable
Min-K Moldable is a bulk wet form of our Min-K microporous product offering. Min-K Moldable can be extruded into shape, troweled, or hand placed into areas where other insulation forms cannot be installed. Min-K Moldable can be used in combination with Min-K Flexible to provide an excellent backup insulation system. Min-K Moldable allows the user to insulate around complex geometries without extensive field fabrication or complex tools.
Extremely thermal efficient
Dries to 16 pcf density
Versatile placement options
Maximum continuous use limit 1400°F
Sonite
Sonite's impressive characteristics of low relative acoustic impedance over a broad range of ambient pressures make it ideal for use as an acoustic release for sonar devices in mid-to-deep ocean applications.
Stable under compression
Low acoustic loss
Moldable to specific shapes
Custom versions available with pressure capabilities up to 10,000 psi
Min-K Composite
A composite insulation system which combines the high temperature use limits of ceramic fiber felts with the low thermal conductivity benefits of microporous insulation. It is composed on K-Shield Felt AG and a microporous core. Features are:
Lightweight
Lower cost
High temperature use limit
Good sound absorptions at different frequencies
Increased flexibility
The Thermal Ceramics Superwool family of products offers a versatile alternative to traditional insulation solutions for commercial, industrial, and transportation applications. Superwool products are special alkaline earth composition fibers that have been uniquely engineered to offer advantages in high temperature insulation applications:
low thermal conductivity
low bio-persistence
low linear shrinkage up to their use limit
Two grades are available:
Superwool 607 for continuous use to 1832°F (1000°C)
Superwool 607 Max for continuous use to 2192°F (1200°C)
These lightweight wool fibers are manufactured using QS 9000/ISO 9002-certified processes and can be:
bagged as bulk
air laid into blankets
converted into boards and shapes
converted into folded modules
blended with liquid binders for coatings and cements
mixed with other materials for wear and friction resistance
Superwool 607® and 607 MAX™ Bulk and Blanket Designed from pure raw materials - Calcium-Magnesium-Silicate (CMS)
Unaffected by incidental oil or water spills
Can be altered to achieve desired properties; fiber diameter, shot content, fiber length, and form
Typical applications include expansion joint construction, base seals, low-mass kiln car construction, tube seal fabrication, and thermal and acoustical insulation.
Superwool 607 Blanket AC2 Made specifically for sound absorption applications
Has excellent sound absorption characteristics, thermal stability, superior mechanical strength and vibration resistance
Flexible, easy to cut and install
Typical applications include HRSG silencers, mufflers, and sound walls
Superwool 607 and 607 Max Pyro-Fold and Pyro-Stack Modules Pyro-Fold modules are accordian-folded modules used for lining industrial furnaces.
Pyro-Stack modules are similar to Pyro-Fold modules with the blanket cut and stacked edge-grain rather than continuously folded.
Offered in three styles - Y Module, M Module and T-Bar
Provide excellent performance in high-temperature applications
Typical applications include homogenizing furnaces, process heaters, annealing furnaces, heat treating furnaces and thermal oxidizers.
Superwool 607 and 607 MAX Paper Thin, flexible high-temperature insulating materials
